Computer operator and data entry operator vacancies are advertised by many different bodies: state police departments, district courts, universities, municipal corporations and central offices. Almost all of them include a typing test, but the exact speed, language and duration change from one advertisement to the next. This page gives you a sensible all-round target so you are ready for most of them.

Typical requirements
A common pattern is 35 words per minute in English and 25 to 30 words per minute in Hindi over a 10-minute test. Some recruiters, especially central ones, express the requirement in key depressions per hour, such as 8,000 or 10,000 KDPH. Others give marks for speed instead of a simple pass or fail.
Because the rules vary, read the advertisement carefully and set the duration and target on this page to match it. Our default settings are a general practice target, not the rule of any particular recruiter.
Skills beyond typing
Many computer operator posts also test basic computer knowledge or practical tasks in word processing and spreadsheets. Typing speed still matters there, because practical tasks are timed. A candidate who can type 40 WPM accurately has more time left for formatting and formulas.
Converting between WPM and KDPH
- 1 WPM equals 5 key depressions per minute, or 300 per hour.
- 8,000 KDPH ≈ 27 WPM; 10,000 KDPH ≈ 33 WPM; 10,500 KDPH = 35 WPM.
- Our result card shows both numbers so you can compare with any advertisement.
Tips to pass the Computer Operator typing test
- Aim for 40 WPM in English and 30 WPM in Hindi; that clears most computer operator tests with a margin.
- Practise numbers and the numeric keypad; data entry tests often include figures.
- Learn one Hindi layout properly rather than half-learning two.
- Keep accuracy above 95%; some recruiters reject results with too many errors regardless of speed.
- Practise on different keyboards if you can — exam centre keyboards vary.
Frequently asked questions
What typing speed is needed for a computer operator job?+
Commonly 35 WPM English and 25–30 WPM Hindi, but each recruiter sets its own rule. Always follow the advertisement.
Is the test in Hindi or English?+
It depends on the post. State government jobs often require Hindi, central jobs often English. Some ask for both.
What is KDPH?+
Key depressions per hour — the number of keys pressed in an hour. 35 WPM is 10,500 KDPH.
Which Hindi layout should I learn?+
InScript is the government standard and easiest to learn from scratch. Kruti Dev / Remington is common in older typing institutes. Choose what your target exam allows.
How long should I practise each day?+
Twenty to thirty minutes of focused practice daily is better than a long session once a week.
Is my result here valid for a job application?+
No. Results and certificates from this site are for practice only.
