InScript Hindi Typing Test

InScript is the standard Indian keyboard layout for Devanagari, built into Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Vowel signs sit on the left of the keyboard and consonants on the right, so your hands alternate as you type. It is the layout most government exams offer for Unicode Hindi typing.

How InScript is organised

On the home row, the left hand types the vowel signs ो, े, ्, ि and ु, while the right hand types the common consonants प, र, क, त, च and ट. Shift gives the related form: the independent vowel instead of the matra, or the aspirated consonant instead of the plain one (क → ख, त → थ, प → फ).

Text is typed in the order it is pronounced. For कि you press क and then ि; the software places the sign correctly on screen. Half letters are made with the halant key (d on a US keyboard): क + ् + ष gives क्ष.

Typing on an English keyboard

You do not need Hindi stickers or any software. Choose InScript in the test and type on your normal keyboard; we read which physical key you pressed and insert the Hindi character. The on-screen chart below the test shows every key, with Shift characters on top.

Frequently asked questions

Is InScript allowed in government typing tests?+

InScript is offered by most exams that test Unicode Hindi, including SSC and CPCT. Always confirm in your notice.

Is InScript harder than Remington?+

For beginners InScript is usually easier, because you type letters in spoken order. Typists trained on typewriters often prefer Remington.

Which key makes a half letter?+

The halant key — d on a US keyboard. Some common conjuncts such as क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र also have their own Shift + number keys.

What font does InScript use?+

Any Unicode Devanagari font, such as Mangal on Windows or Noto Sans Devanagari. The text is standard Unicode.

Do I need to install anything?+

No. The mapping runs in your browser.
