Remington Gail Hindi Typing Test

Remington Gail is a Unicode keyboard layout that keeps the key positions of the old Remington Hindi typewriter. It lets typists who learned on typewriters or on the Kruti Dev font produce modern Unicode text without relearning their fingers.

Typing in visual order

On a typewriter you type what you see from left to right. The short i matra (ि) appears before its consonant, so you press it first: f then d gives कि. The reph (र् written above the next letter) is typed after the syllable it sits on: d k ; Z gives कार्य. Our converter handles this reordering and produces correct Unicode.

Many half letters have their own keys in this layout. Shift + a consonant key often gives the half form (D = क्, L = स्), and the ा key (k) after a half letter completes it.

Remington Gail and Kruti Dev

Remington Gail and Kruti Dev use the same typewriter key positions, so the same finger habits work in both. On this site both modes share one mapping. A few rare characters that need Alt codes in Kruti Dev (for example ऊ and ँ) can be entered with the Windows Alt code if your browser passes it through.

Frequently asked questions

Is Remington Gail the same as Kruti Dev?+

The key positions are almost the same. Kruti Dev is a legacy font; Remington Gail produces Unicode text.

Why do I type ि before the consonant?+

Because the layout copies the typewriter, where you type characters in the order they appear on paper.

How do I type a reph (र्)?+

Type the syllable first, then Z. For example dk;Z gives कार्य.

Which exams allow Remington Gail?+

Many Unicode Hindi tests, including CPCT and some SSC tests, offer it. Confirm in your notice.

Do I need special software?+

No. The mapping works in your browser on any English keyboard.
