The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research recruits Junior Secretariat Assistants for its many national laboratories through a combined examination. After the written papers, candidates take a computer typing test, with the commonly quoted standard of 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi. JSAs in CSIR labs work in general administration, finance and accounts, or stores and purchase, all of which involve a lot of typing.

Typing in a research organisation

Administrative work in a laboratory includes purchase orders, project files, travel claims and staff matters. Passages for such posts are formal and administrative, often with numbers and technical names. Practise office passages and pay attention to numbers in your error analysis.

The typing test is qualifying, and your selection depends on the written examination merit.

Retyping and repeated passages

Some skill tests ask you to keep typing the same passage until time runs out. Turn on the retyping option in the test settings to practise that pattern: when you reach the end of the passage, it starts again from the beginning.

Targets

  • English: 35 WPM, about 10,500 KDPH.
  • Hindi: 30 WPM, about 9,000 KDPH.
  • Practise at least 5 WPM above the target.

Choosing English or Hindi

CSIR laboratories work bilingually, and the skill test can usually be taken in either language as the notice allows. Compare your net speed in both on this site before you decide. If your Hindi speed is well above 30 WPM and your English is only just above 35, Hindi may be the safer choice, and the reverse is also true. Whichever you pick, practise only that language in the final month so your fingers settle into one layout.

Tips to pass the CSIR JSA typing test

  • Practise numbers and abbreviations used in purchase and accounts work.
  • Use the retyping setting to simulate repeated passages.
  • Keep accuracy above 95 percent.
  • Do full ten-minute tests three times a week.
  • Pick one Hindi layout and do not switch.
  • Try the retyping option a few times so a repeated passage on the day does not surprise you.
