Under the law relating to the right to information, every public authority is required to designate officers who shall receive requests from citizens and provide the information sought, subject to the exemptions recognised by the statute. A request may be made in writing or through electronic means, and the applicant is not required to give any reason for seeking the information. The officer concerned shall dispose of the request within the period prescribed, either by furnishing the information on payment of the applicable fee or by rejecting it for reasons to be recorded in writing. Where the information sought concerns the life or liberty of a person, the period for response is considerably shorter. If the request pertains to a subject matter more closely connected with another public authority, it shall be transferred to that authority and the applicant shall be informed of such transfer without delay. An order of rejection must state the provision under which the request has been declined, the period within which an appeal may be preferred and the particulars of the appellate authority. Failure to respond within the stipulated time may be treated as a deemed refusal, entitling the applicant to approach the first appellate authority. The appellate authority, after giving the parties an opportunity of being heard, may direct disclosure, uphold the refusal or pass such other order as it considers appropriate. Officers are therefore expected to maintain proper records of every request received, the action taken thereon and the date of communication to the applicant. Delay in the disposal of civil suits is frequently attributed to the routine grant of adjournments. The procedural law permits the court to adjourn the hearing of a suit from time to time if sufficient cause is shown, but it also places limits on how often this may be done. Ordinarily, not more than three adjournments are to be granted to a party during the hearing of a suit, and the court is required to record its reasons whenever an adjournment is allowed. English court passages

Expect phrases such as learned counsel for the petitioner, civil writ petition, impugned order, the respondent State and in view of the above. These phrases repeat often, contain capitals and commas, and reward practice.

Some recruitments award marks for speed beyond the minimum, so every extra word per minute can help your final position.

Accuracy first

Court staff must produce error-free orders, and typing tests reflect that. A fast typist with many errors often scores less than a steady typist with very few. Use the error analysis after each test to see whether your mistakes are mostly spelling, capitalisation or punctuation, and practise accordingly.

Practice routine

  • Two warm-up tests of two minutes.
  • One full ten-minute legal passage.
  • Drill the five words you missed most.

Exam-day checklist

Before the test starts, adjust the chair, check that Caps Lock is off and read the first line of the passage. During the test, keep your eyes on the passage and trust your fingers. If you lose your place, find the last word you typed rather than starting the sentence again. Keep going after mistakes; stopping to stare at an error costs more time than the error itself.

Tips to pass the P&H HC typing test

  • Practise legal phrases as complete units, not word by word.
  • Watch capital letters in case titles and statute names.
  • Aim for at least 35 WPM net in practice.
  • Keep accuracy above 95 percent.
