Under the law relating to the right to information, every public authority is required to designate officers who shall receive requests from citizens and provide the information sought, subject to the exemptions recognised by the statute. A request may be made in writing or through electronic means, and the applicant is not required to give any reason for seeking the information. The officer concerned shall dispose of the request within the period prescribed, either by furnishing the information on payment of the applicable fee or by rejecting it for reasons to be recorded in writing. Where the information sought concerns the life or liberty of a person, the period for response is considerably shorter. If the request pertains to a subject matter more closely connected with another public authority, it shall be transferred to that authority and the applicant shall be informed of such transfer without delay. An order of rejection must state the provision under which the request has been declined, the period within which an appeal may be preferred and the particulars of the appellate authority. Failure to respond within the stipulated time may be treated as a deemed refusal, entitling the applicant to approach the first appellate authority. The appellate authority, after giving the parties an opportunity of being heard, may direct disclosure, uphold the refusal or pass such other order as it considers appropriate. Officers are therefore expected to maintain proper records of every request received, the action taken thereon and the date of communication to the applicant. Delay in the disposal of civil suits is frequently attributed to the routine grant of adjournments. The procedural law permits the court to adjourn the hearing of a suit from time to time if sufficient cause is shown, but it also places limits on how often this may be done. Ordinarily, not more than three adjournments are to be granted to a party during the hearing of a suit, and the court is required to record its reasons whenever an adjournment is allowed. Junior Court Assistants at the Supreme Court of India are recruited through an objective test, a typing test on computer and a descriptive test, followed by an interview. The typing test is in English and the speed commonly quoted is 35 words per minute. Because the Supreme Court registry works almost entirely in English, the passages are drawn from formal legal writing with long sentences, citations and precise punctuation.

Typing for the country's highest court

A Junior Court Assistant prepares office notes, listing information and correspondence for the registry. The typing test reflects that work: expect words like petitioner, respondent, special leave petition, judgment, order and registry, alongside article and section numbers. Practising similar text is the most effective preparation.

Permissible errors are usually limited, so accuracy matters as much as the headline speed.

Speed and accuracy targets

If the requirement is 35 WPM, practise until you can hold 40 WPM net with at least 95 percent accuracy over a full ten-minute passage. That margin protects you from nerves and an unfamiliar keyboard.

Recommended practice

  • Use the legal passages on this page; exam pages pick them first.
  • Check capitalisation and punctuation errors in the error analysis after each test.
  • Do one blind-mode test each week to get used to typing without colour feedback.

After the typing test

The descriptive test and interview follow the typing test, so plan your preparation to keep all stages moving together rather than treating typing as a separate project.

Tips to pass the SCI JCA typing test

  • Learn to type article and section references fluently, such as Article 32 and Section 482.
  • Watch capital letters in case titles and the names of courts and statutes.
  • Keep a steady rhythm; long legal sentences reward consistency more than bursts of speed.
  • Practise full ten-minute tests at least three times a week.
  • Prepare for the descriptive test separately; the typing test is only one stage.
